The concept of credit cards originated when department stores began offering charge cards to their customers. This idea of issuing credit in the plastic form was expanded when companies like Visa and MasterCard began issuing cards that were accepted by many stores and businesses. All credit card issuers charge interest for the use of their services if you do not pay off your balance in full by the end of each billing cycle.
